A major disaster in Nicasio could be the result of an earthquake, major fire, or even a nearby terrorist incident. Only adequate planning and preparation will mitigate the effects of a disaster and potentially save lives and property.
Disaster Preparation for Nicasio residents includes the following elements:
Having a home disaster plan in place which includes:
- Knowing how to evacuate your building and property quickly.
- Planning what to take if you have 5 minutes warning, and what to take if you have an hour or more to evacuate (for instance in case of an approaching fire).
- Maintaining a fire defensible space around the home.
- Keeping street numbers and signs clearly visible for day and night identification.
- Knowing your Neighborhood Liaison, and the designated emergency Rally Point.
- Keeping up to date in the Neighborhood Liaison’s manual your property details, list of occupants, and available emergency skills if any.
- Knowing how to turn off propane, water, and electricity if necessary.
- Stockpiling of food, water and needed medications in case you are cut off.
- Having an action plan and communications plan for family members who are somewhere else when a disaster occurs.
- Having a plan for the evacuation of pets and livestock.
The first stage of the Community Disaster Plan for Nicasio is to account for all residents through the neighborhood network. Thereafter the Community response will be determined by the type of disaster and the resources available to meet it. After accounting for and safeguarding your own family and property, contact your Neighborhood Liaison to report your status. This will save the Liaison’s vital time and effort in accounting for all residents. If you can not get through by telephone, send a message by vehicle or go on foot. Consider what assistance you can give your neighbors, but don’t do it alone. Going to the Rally Point will allow the Neighborhood Liaison to form teams to check on other properties in your Neighborhood. If you have a special skill or some suitable emergency equipment available, let your Neighborhood Liaison know. If your skill is not needed in your own Neighborhood, the Liaison may direct you to the community Assembly Area (at the Rancho Nicasio) where specific teams will be formed and tasks allocated by the Nicasio Disaster Coordinator. When you volunteer to assist your Neighborhood Liaison, or the Nicasio Disaster Team, try to be as self sufficient as possible. As a minimum, bring your own snacks, water, flashlight, pencil and notebook, and wear suitable clothing for the season. If needed, an Emergency Shelter and a First Aid post will be established at the Nicasio School, a Disaster Management Center will be established at the Fire House, and an Assembly Point and Information Post will be maintained at the Rancho Nicasio.
