Established in 1946, the Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) is
the only all-volunteer fire department in Marin County. The NVFD
supports the Marin County Fire Department on emergency calls within the
Nicasio response area and, because most of our ten members live in the
community, we are often first on-scene to help those in need. Our
diverse membership includes long time residents as well as newer
transplants, men and women, hi-tech professionals and professional
firefighters, young and, well… less young. In addition to
our training for medical and fire related emergency response what
unites us is our shared commitment to serving the Nicasio community and
to helping those in need. We invite you to learn more about the
NVFD and its history, the Ladies Auxiliary, the Disaster Council,
current projects and especially about how you can become involved.
Who We Are/History
Like many early volunteer departments, the founding members of
the NVFD consisted of a group of residents who frequented the local
tavern and so were on hand when the siren sounded. Today, the
NVFD continues the “off duty” tradition, but has evolved into a well
trained, on-call first responder force providing support for the Marin
County Fire Department a wide range of emergency calls, from treating
bee stings at the annual Harvest fair, to vehicle accidents, to
wildland and structure fires, to horse related accidents. Our training
program is similarly diverse and includes hands-on practice of relevant
skills in weekly drills. Like most fire departments, the NVFD
runs a number of emergency preparedness and prevention projects in
addition to providing aid in emergency situations. Click here if
you are interested in becoming volunteers or just in learning more.
A 501©4 organization, the NVFD’s modest budget is funded by a
combination of donations, community fundraisers and state, local and
federal grants. Our annual BBQ/fundraiser is the largest social
event in the community as well as our largest fundraising event.
NVFD fundraising events are planned and managed by the “Ladies’
Auxiliary” of the NVFD, which is a critical component of the
department’s fundraising and organizational infrastructure.
